4.1. How to set up the Raspberry Pi

In this article, I'll explain how to set up the Raspberry Pi to get real-time movie.

0. Preparing for setting up

Before setting up the Raspberry Pi, it needs a number of hardware below.

・To set up an operating system for the Raspberry Pi
  - PC : Windows/Mac/Linux
  - SD card : Recommend size is more than 8GB

 ・To operate the Raspberry Pi
  - Power adapter
  - Keyboard
  - HDMI-HDMI lead or / DVI lead
  - Display or TV

If you prepare for a SD card and a keyboard, please confirm below links whether the Raspberry Pi's verified peripherals.

 ・Check working / Non-working SD cards.
 ・Check working / Non-working keyboards.

1. Downloading an operating system package

The Raspberry Pi itself doesn't work. To work properly, it needs a SD card with an operating system. Please download a package called NOOBS (New Out of Box Software).

The NOOBS is a package that contains some operating systems. When the Raspberry Pi is plugged into power adapter, the NOOBS enables to select some operating systems that we want to install.

2. Installing the NOOBS onto a SD card

Please install the NOOBS onto a SD card with Windows/Mac/Linux. In the Raspberry Pi official website, there are detailed instructions for each operating system.

3.  Plugging other hardware into the Raspberry Pi

Please plug a SD card, a keyboard, a HDMI-HDMI lead or / DVI lead, and a power adapter into the Raspberry Pi properly.

4. Unpacking NOOBS and installing Raspbian

After plugging a power supply, a dialog for setting up operating system will appear on a display/TV screen. Please select Raspbian with a keyboard.

Raspbian is an operating system based on Debian optimized for the Raspberry Pi.

And for more detail on setting up, please refer to Adafruit Industries official website.

I roughly explained in this artcile about how to set up the Raspberry Pi, because there are a lot of documents about this procedure on the Web.

I would like to explain how to build a Wi-Fi network for the Raspberry Pi in the next article.
